The Republic of Moldova respects other states but will not support countries that back the war in Ukraine, Speaker Igor Grosu said after Alexandr Lukashenko suggested that Moldova should not sever ties with CIS countries and the Russian Federation.

Grosu made the statement when asked by journalists to comment on Igor Dodon’s visit to Minsk. He also said that the Socialist leader “goes where he is still welcomed.”

“We have had and continue to have good relations with those who respect us. We were not the ones who broke relations, because we have no reason to. (…) Countries that are not sincere in their intentions or that help aggressor states by using their territory to attack Ukraine raise doubts for us regarding the sincerity of their friendship gestures,” Grosu said, responding to Lukashenko’s remarks about maintaining ties with CIS states.

The leader of the Socialists, Igor Dodon, visited Minsk on Wednesday, where he met with Alexandr Lukashenko. During the meeting, Dodon criticized the current government and referred to Lukashenko as a “patriot of Moldova.”

Dodon also spoke about European integration, claiming that President Maia Sandu had effectively acknowledged it could not be achieved and arguing that her statements on unification undermine Moldova’s statehood, according to BelTA.

In response, Lukashenko urged Moldovans not to cut relations with the Russian Federation despite their European aspirations and also expressed “love” for Moldova.
