A bipartisan bill aimed at strengthening Moldova’s energy security and reducing its dependence on Russian energy resources has been introduced in the United States Congress, according to the Ministry of Energy.

Representatives Deborah Ross and Mike Lawler, co-chairs of the Congressional Moldova Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives, introduced the initiative, titled the “Promoting Oversight With Energy Resilience for Moldova Act” (POWER Moldova Act 2026).

The proposed legislation aims to expand cooperation between Moldovan and U.S. authorities in the energy sector, monitor progress on energy infrastructure projects, and facilitate the exchange of technology and expertise, including in renewable energy.

Authorities in Chisinau welcomed the initiative and described it as a clear signal of political support from Washington for strengthening Moldova’s energy security.

According to the bill’s sponsors, the legislation forms part of the bipartisan support the United States provides to the Republic of Moldova and reflects recognition of the country’s progress in diversifying its energy sources in recent years.

Over the past several years, Moldova has significantly reduced its dependence on Russian energy imports by accelerating integration into the European energy market and diversifying supply sources amid the energy crisis triggered by Russia’s war against Ukraine.

The United States remains one of Chisinau’s key partners in the energy sector. U.S. support has contributed to interconnection projects with Romania, including the Straseni–Gutinas 400 kV Power Transmission Line, as well as initiatives aimed at developing new electricity generation capacities.
