Outgoing Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu has made his first public remarks since announcing his resignation, saying he is leaving office with a “very clear conscience” and will ensure a professional transition of the government.

Asked by journalists whether he was at peace with his decision to step down, Munteanu said he had fulfilled his responsibilities and would continue performing his duties until a new Cabinet is sworn in.

“I understand that many were expecting controversy. I tried not to look at social media, but from what I’ve heard and from those who did, 90% of the scenarios circulating are simply not true. The story is more complicated. Time will put everything into perspective. My conscience is very clear. I did what I had to do, and now I am continuing my duty. I will ensure a smooth and professional transition,” Munteanu said.

The caretaker prime minister stressed that Moldova is going through a crucial period and cannot afford political instability or institutional deadlock.

“We are in the process of European integration. We cannot afford to deviate from that path or create unnecessary controversy. We will continue working,” he said.

Speaking about his plans after leaving office, Munteanu said he intends to devote more time to cultural and academic projects. According to him, he has received invitations to deliver lectures at several universities, including Columbia University in New York, as well as to participate in projects with the Alliance Française.

Asked about reports that he had attempted to reform certain state institutions but had been prevented from doing so, the outgoing prime minister declined to comment, saying he did not wish to address speculation.

Munteanu announced his resignation on July 3, citing personal and principled reasons. President Maia Sandu later confirmed his resignation, stating that although the government had undertaken difficult reforms, she had expected greater involvement from the prime minister.

The Munteanu Government took office in November 2025.
