Prime Minister Vasile Tofan says he does not intend to run in the 2028 presidential election and plans to remain in office until the end of his mandate in September 2029, focusing on economic recovery and advancing the Republic of Moldova’s European integration process.
Speaking on TV8’s program “Новая неделя” with Anatolie Golea, Tofan said he had made a commitment to his family to stay in office until the end of his term and that, afterwards, he plans to return to a normal life.
“I have a plan for this country. I believe that the remaining three years and two months are enough to bring real changes to the lives of Moldovans,” the prime minister said.
The head of government emphasized that his main priorities are reviving the economy, which he described as being in a state of “semi-coma,” and bringing Moldova closer to its goal of joining the European Union.
“If we have a competitive economy and sign the accession agreement with the European Union, this will be a great success for our country,” Tofan said.
Asked whether he was considering a potential candidacy in the 2028 presidential elections, the prime minister ruled out such a possibility, suggesting that even his family would not support such a scenario.
Tofan also rejected speculation about his possible involvement in a new political project. Although he acknowledged that he remains in contact with members of the civic initiative “Europa-2028”, made up of entrepreneurs, economists, and investors, he said he has distanced himself institutionally from the platform and has no plans to transform it into a political party.
“I am not in this position because of personal ambitions. My goal is not to become a major politician. I want to do this job well, and I am very determined to see it through to the end,” the prime minister concluded.
