Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu says former Prime Minister Ion Chicu’s initiative to suspend President Maia Sandu from office has no realistic chance of succeeding, describing it as a political publicity exercise.
Speaking to reporters ahead of Parliament’s July 30 session, Grosu said he believes the proposal is intended to generate political attention rather than achieve a concrete result.
“I don’t think even he believes in this initiative. It’s a PR action, and he—or whoever advised him politically—probably thinks it will benefit him. Obviously, it is an initiative with no chance of success,” Grosu said.
Chicu recently announced that he plans to register a draft proposal to suspend Sandu during the first plenary sitting of the next parliamentary session. He said the initiative would first be presented for public consultation. The proposal was initially announced on July 20.
Under Moldovan law, Chicu must secure 34 signatures from MPs to formally submit the initiative in Parliament.
The Presidential Administration responded by noting that the Constitution provides a legal mechanism for initiating such procedures and that Parliament will examine any proposal in accordance with the law.
“The President holds a mandate entrusted by the citizens, which she fulfills with full responsibility,” the Presidential Administration’s press service said.
