The Parliament of the Republic of Moldova has announced public consultations on amendments to the Electoral Code required to organize elections in the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia before the legislation is adopted in its second reading.
The consultations will take place on August 5, starting at 10:00 a.m., in the Europa Hall of Parliament.
According to Parliament’s press service, those wishing to participate must register by 5:00 p.m. on August 4 via email at cji@parlament.md or aliona.prisacaru@parlament.md, or by calling (+373 22) 820 537.
On July 30, Parliament approved the Electoral Code amendments in their first reading.
Following criticism that the consultation process had been insufficient, Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu announced that the draft law would be discussed publicly before being put to a second-reading vote.
Lawmakers are expected to convene in an extraordinary parliamentary session on August 24–25 to consider several legislative initiatives, including the amendments regulating elections in Gagauzia.
Meanwhile, the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia has proposed several changes to the draft law, including the removal of the term “disguised independent candidate,” arguing that it creates legal uncertainty. Regional lawmakers have also requested clearer rules regarding the electoral restrictions that apply to local public officials during election campaigns.
