President Maia Sandu has described former Prime Minister Ion Chicu’s intention to seek her removal from office as “hypocrisy,” arguing that those backing the initiative have a history of actions that undermined Moldova’s independence and territorial integrity.
Speaking publicly, Sandu highlighted the government’s efforts to strengthen Moldova’s energy security and defense capabilities. She also suggested that Russia has never abandoned its ambition to keep Moldova within its sphere of influence.
“The Russian Federation has never accepted the results of the elections held in recent years and continues trying to destroy everything we have built here to strengthen our sovereignty, so that decisions are made in Chisinau rather than in Moscow. This is just one example of the actions of those who work in Moscow’s interests and believe they can use those interests to return to power,” Sandu said.
Earlier, Ion Chicu announced that he could register a motion to suspend President Maia Sandu from office during the first plenary sitting of Parliament’s next session. The lawmaker said he intends to hold public consultations on the initiative before formally submitting the proposal.
