Environment Minister Gheorghe Hajder said the future regional waste management center in Anenii Noi district will comply with European standards and will not pose a risk to nearby communities. He made the remarks during the Rezoomat program on Realitatea TV amid ongoing public debate over the project.
Hajder acknowledged that opposition to such infrastructure projects is common but stressed that the facility will be modern, secure, and designed to minimize environmental impact.
“Everyone wants such a project, but not in their own village. It will be a secure facility with administrative offices, where only waste that cannot be further treated will be disposed of. Waste will be sorted, a large share will return to the economic cycle through recycling, and biodegradable waste will be processed into compost,” the minister said.
He added that the project follows European models and should not negatively affect surrounding communities.
“We are talking about a modern European project that should not harm anyone,” Hajder stated.
Earlier this month, the local authorities of Puhaceni and Serpeni, together with the Anenii Noi District Council, called for a review of the decision to locate what is set to become Moldova’s largest waste management center in the district. They submitted a formal request to the Ministry of Environment asking for the project to be reassessed.
