Natural gas is becoming more expensive in the Republic of Moldova. The National Energy Regulatory Agency (ANRE) approved today, August 21, a new tariff of 20.30 lei per cubic meter, including VAT, for household consumers. The tariff is equivalent to 18.70 lei excluding VAT.
The new tariff is 5.88 lei higher than the current price of 14.42 lei per cubic meter, representing an increase of nearly 41%.
The increase comes after gas supplier Energocom initially requested a tariff of 20.93 lei per cubic meter. Following a review and adjustment of the company’s calculations, ANRE approved a lower tariff of 20.30 lei.
According to Energocom, the increase is mainly driven by higher natural gas procurement costs on international markets amid geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The supplier also cited accumulated financial deviations exceeding 106 million lei.
Prime Minister Vasile Tofan recently said Moldova cannot completely avoid the impact of developments on international energy markets because the country remains dependent on external gas prices.
Once the new tariff takes effect, household consumers will pay almost 6 lei more for every cubic meter of natural gas they use. The new tariff will enter into force after ANRE’s decision is published in the Official Gazette.
The previous increase in Moldova’s natural gas tariff took place on December 1, 2024, when the price for household consumers rose by more than 27% to 16.74 lei per cubic meter, including VAT.
