Romanian President Nicusor Dan and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will visit the Republic of Moldova on Thursday, August 27, to take part in events marking the country’s 35th Independence Day.
The two heads of state are expected to arrive in Chisinau on Thursday afternoon and will join Moldovan President Maia Sandu for the national celebrations.
Independence Day Program
The president’s official program will begin at 8:30 a.m., when Maia Sandu, together with Prime Minister Vasile Tofan and Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, will lay flowers at the Eternity Memorial Complex.
At approximately 9:30 a.m., the officials will proceed to the monument of medieval Moldovan ruler Stephen the Great and Holy, where they will also lay flowers.
At 2:35 p.m., Maia Sandu will welcome Romanian President Nicusor Dan. The two presidents will then attend the military parade dedicated to Moldova’s Independence Day.
Zelensky to Join Trilateral Meeting
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is scheduled to arrive in Chisinau at 6:00 p.m.
A trilateral meeting of delegations from Moldova, Romania and Ukraine will follow. The three presidents are also expected to make joint statements to the press.
The leaders will discuss issues of common interest and regional cooperation, with the meeting taking place against the backdrop of Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine and Moldova’s European integration efforts.
Leaders to Address Citizens in Chisinau
In the evening, Maia Sandu, Nicusor Dan and Volodymyr Zelensky will head to the Great National Assembly Square, where they are scheduled to address citizens after 9:00 p.m.
The visits of the Romanian and Ukrainian presidents come as Moldova marks 35 years since the proclamation of independence, with a series of official ceremonies, a military parade and public celebrations planned throughout August 27.
