Around 8,000 children in Chisinau will receive 700 lei each from the municipal authorities to help cover the cost of school supplies, backpacks and other items needed for the new school year.
The announcement was made by Chisinau Mayor Ion Ceban during a municipal meeting on Monday, August 31. According to the mayor, the financial support is intended for children and families most in need.
“Chisinau City Hall will once again, as in previous years, provide around 8,000 children with 700 lei each for the beginning of the school year. It may not be much, but we are trying to provide this support every year to children and families with significant needs,” Ceban said.
The mayor described the initiative as a permanent social program and noted that Chisinau currently has more than 120 social assistance programs.
Free Public Transport for Primary School Students
Ceban also highlighted that primary school students in Chisinau benefit from free public transport passes.
He asked public transport employees to pay particular attention to children and avoid situations in which students could be mistreated or removed from public transport because they cannot present a pass or student ID.
“In case of any misunderstandings, please inform the relevant institution so that the necessary measures can be taken, and I assure you that they will be taken,” Ceban said.
85% of School Preparations Completed
Municipal authorities also reported that 85% of the planned works in educational institutions have been completed ahead of the new school year.
According to Andrei Pavaloi, deputy head of the General Directorate for Education, Youth and Sports, renovation and preparation works were planned at 146 institutions, including 51 kindergartens, 86 schools and seven extracurricular institutions.
The total budget allocated for the works exceeds 146 million lei.
“As of today, 85% of the works have been completed. The only works that have not been completed are the more complex ones, such as major roof repairs or work on food service facilities, where longer interventions are required,” Pavaloi explained.
Work has also been carried out around schools and kindergartens. Pedestrian crossing markings have been renewed, sections of roads and access routes have been repaired, and dry trees posing potential risks have been removed.
“We are ready for the start of the new school year and we are very happy to welcome everyone on September 1,” Pavaloi said.
School opening ceremonies in most schools across Chisinau are scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. on September 1.
