Moldova’s National Anticorruption Center (NAC) has carried out searches at the home of a social worker in Chisinau who allegedly demanded and received 2,000 lei every month from the social assistance benefit of a single mother raising three children, one of whom has a disability.

According to investigators, the money was allegedly requested on the pretext that the social worker had influence over members of the relevant commission and could persuade them to ensure that the family continued receiving social assistance payments.

Several alleged illegal acts were documented as part of the criminal investigation and special investigative measures, the NAC said.

“Today, NAC officers seized relevant evidence needed to fully document the alleged criminal activity. The person concerned is being investigated while remaining at liberty. The investigation is continuing to establish the full circle of suspects and any possible involvement at the level of the relevant commission,” the National Anticorruption Center said.

The social worker has not been detained and remains under investigation at liberty.

Authorities are continuing the investigation to establish all circumstances of the case and determine whether other people were involved.
