Ecaterina Cheptanaru has published her first message after winning the competition for the position of director general of the public broadcaster Teleradio-Moldova. She said she plans to improve the quality of public audiovisual content, support professional journalism and modernize the institution.
In a Facebook post, Cheptanaru said her new mandate comes with “clear objectives” and the responsibility to turn them into results.
“My priority is to continue improving the quality of public audiovisual content, support professional journalism, invest in people and technology, and strengthen Teleradio-Moldova’s role as a modern, relevant public media service that is close to citizens,” she wrote.
The new director general stressed that the institution represents both its employees and its audience. “Their trust is earned through professionalism, fairness, balance and quality,” she said. Cheptanaru added that she intends to preserve what works, change what she considers necessary and build what is missing.
In her message, Cheptanaru also addressed reports published by some online outlets claiming that she is related to Moldovan President Maia Sandu.
“In this context, the information published by some dubious websites claiming that I am related to Maia Sandu, President of the Republic of Moldova, or to other people holding public positions is not true. There is no family relationship,” she said.
Cheptanaru said she intends to take legal action against those who continue to spread such claims.
She also said she won the competition because of her experience in journalism, management and civil society.
“I am starting this mandate with respect for Teleradio-Moldova, confidence in its people and a clear responsibility toward the public,” Cheptanaru said.
Cheptanaru has more than 10 years of experience in the media. She previously served as deputy director general of Teleradio-Moldova and worked for several media organizations.
She began her career in 2011 as a specialist with the government commission responsible for developing youth policies. A year later, she became the host of the “Omul de lângă” program at Teleradio-Moldova.
Between 2014 and 2015, she worked at Canal Regional, where she hosted the “Moldova-Europa” program. From 2017 to 2019, she headed Canal Regional’s Central Studio and managed a network of 15 local television stations. For 11 years, she was the author of the “Punți către Europa” project, broadcast by Realitatea TV.
Cheptanaru holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in International Relations and Institutional Communication. She also completed a Media Management training program at the Moldova School of Journalism.
