The son of a senior official from Moldova’s Intelligence and Security Service (SIS) has been placed in pre-trial detention for 30 days in connection with a group robbery case involving a 19-year-old student in Chisinau.
The official, Ion Tabirta, head of the Guard Service within the General Directorate for Internal Protection of the SIS, confirmed to PulsMedia.MD that one of the suspects is his son.
“I condemn what my son did. From what I understand, he was passively involved. If he is found guilty before the law, he should serve his sentence,” Tabirta said.
According to preliminary information, the incident took place on the evening of September 24 near student dormitories in Chisinau.
The 19-year-old student was reportedly walking with a 16-year-old female acquaintance when they encountered a group of five young people from the girl’s social circle.
Investigators allege that the group subsequently attacked the student for reasons that remain under investigation. According to information cited by local media, the suspects allegedly stripped, restrained and assaulted the young man, subjected him to humiliating and degrading acts, and took 1,400 Moldovan lei from him.
The alleged incident was reportedly recorded on the suspects’ mobile phones. The victim was then allegedly threatened that the footage would be posted on social media if he reported the incident to law enforcement authorities.
Sources cited in the investigation also claim that the group included the son of the owner of an IT company.
All five young men suspected of attacking and humiliating the 19-year-old student have been placed in pre-trial detention for 30 days.
Journalists contacted prosecutor Serghei Mitrofan of the Chisinau Municipal Prosecutor’s Office for additional details, but he did not respond to calls.
The investigation is ongoing, and the allegations against the suspects have not been established by a final court ruling.
