Chisinau’s General Directorate of Education, Youth and Sport has launched an internal review following an incident at a school in the capital, where several students reportedly received psychotropic pills from four underage classmates.
The Directorate said that while the investigation of the circumstances falls under the authority of the Police, it will take all necessary measures within its responsibilities to prevent further incidents and protect students.
“Although the verification of the circumstances of the case falls within the competence of the Police, the General Directorate of Education, Youth and Sport is acting within its responsibilities and will apply all necessary institutional prevention, protection and intervention mechanisms,” the institution said in a statement.
The Directorate will request the schools concerned to clarify the circumstances, fully cooperate with law enforcement authorities and immediately take the measures necessary to ensure students’ safety.
DGETS also said it will continue monitoring the situation and take further action within its remit based on the findings of the competent authorities.
The incident came to light on Tuesday, September 29, after the mother of a minor student notified Chisinau Police that a psychotropic pill had been found in her daughter’s possession.
The girl reportedly told police that the substance had been given to her by a classmate.
Following the initial checks, police identified four minors aged between 12 and 16 who allegedly possessed and distributed such pills among their classmates for entertainment purposes.
According to the information provided by authorities, the minors were reportedly unaware of the nature and composition of the substances they were distributing.
The circumstances of the case are being investigated by the competent authorities.
