Moldova’s National Army is set to enlist up to 1,200 recruits for compulsory military service and another 10 for short-term military service between October 2026 and January 2027. The provisions are included in a draft prepared by the Ministry of Defence that sets the targets for the new conscription campaign. The document is to be approved by the Government.

According to the document, the largest number of recruits will come from Chișinău municipality, with 167. A total of 43 recruits are planned for Bălți municipality, while 46 are to be enlisted from the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia. The districts of Cahul and Hâncești are each expected to provide 53 recruits, while Ungheni District is to provide 47.

The conscription campaign will be organised by the Ministry of Defence in cooperation with local public administration authorities and military centres. The authorities will also ensure that recruits undergo medical examinations, while the Ministry of Education and Research, local authorities, and military centres will organise educational activities focused on military and patriotic themes.

The document also provides for the discharge from military service and transfer to the Armed Forces reserve of service members whose terms of service have expired.

According to the explanatory note, setting the number of recruits is intended to ensure that the National Army has the personnel it needs and to temporarily maintain the mixed system for staffing the Armed Forces until the optimal structure of the national defence system is determined.
