A Ukrainian citizen was found dead in a field outside the village of Clocusna, Ocnita District, approximately 250 metres from the border with Ukraine. According to the Police, the man had no bodily injuries or gunshot wounds, and the exact cause of death could not be established.

The case was initially made public by MP Vasile Costiuc, leader of the Democracy at Home (DA) Party, who spoke about the circumstances in which the man was found.

“To confirm what I said about Ukrainian border police killing Ukrainian people on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, I will submit a formal request and present evidence that has not been made public anywhere, although the case did happen. I will show you the photographs. In 2025, a man from Ukraine who was fleeing the war was shot in the head,” Costiuc said.

The Police said they were notified by the Border Police on July 13, 2024, through the 112 emergency service. The man’s identity was established by examining the mobile phone found in his possession. He was 27 years old at the time of his disappearance.

According to information gathered by investigators, between June 21 and 24, 2024, the man allegedly attempted to cross the state border illegally from Ukraine into the Republic of Moldova.

According to the forensic examination, the exact cause of death could not be determined because the body was in an advanced state of decomposition.

Following its checks, the Police found no elements constituting a criminal offence and stated that no evidence had been identified to justify continuing the criminal investigation.

It is worth recalling that on October 17 this year, two Ukrainian servicemen allegedly attempted to forcibly stop a Ukrainian man who was trying to swim across the Dniester River to reach the Republic of Moldova. The servicemen reportedly reached the river’s right bank, on Moldovan territory, where they became involved in a confrontation with several Moldovan citizens. The case was also made public by MP Vasile Costiuc.

Subsequently, the Ukrainian citizen, who was taken to the hospital in Soroca with a concussion after allegedly being assaulted by border guards while swimming across the Dniester, applied for asylum in the Republic of Moldova.
