Moldova to Hold Closed-Door Hearings Into Data Leak Affecting 750,000 Citizens

Moldovan Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu has announced that hearings will be held to clarify the circumstances surrounding the leak of personal data belonging to approximately 750,000 citizens of the Republic of Moldova.

The initiative was proposed by Lilian Carp, chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security, Defence and Public Order, and was unanimously supported by the committee’s members.

“To establish which institution is responsible, there must be an assessment and an investigation. Mr. Carp proposed at yesterday’s meeting of the Committee on National Security, Defence and Public Order that hearings be organised, and the committee unanimously decided to hold them. We have specialised parliamentary committees in this field. I believe Mr. Carp has demonstrated on other occasions, when similar initiatives were launched, that he can analyse and examine such incidents calmly and impartially,” Igor Grosu said on Thursday, October 29.

Committee chairman and MP Lilian Carp said the hearings would take place on November 4 behind closed doors.

Personal data belonging to approximately 750,000 citizens was extracted without authorisation in cyberattacks carried out between October 19 and 23. Hackers reportedly targeted around one million personal identification numbers (IDNPs).

The stolen information includes identification details, information about relatives and assets, social benefits, and certain financial data.

Following the incident, Nicoleta Colomeeț, head of the Electronic Governance Agency (AGE), announced her resignation. Agency representatives said financial systems had not been compromised, but warned that the stolen data could be used in fraud attempts.
