(VIDEO) Emil Loteanu – A Cinematic Legacy Worth Rediscovering 90 Years After the Director’s Birth

The cinematic legacy of Emil Loteanu is a source of national pride and deserves to be rediscovered in order to better understand the artistic phenomenon represented by the filmmaker. This was the view expressed by guests on Realitatea TV’s Consens Național programme, in an edition dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the birth of the renowned director and screenwriter.

The programme revisited important moments from Emil Loteanu’s life and career, including the creation of major cinematic masterpieces, the discovery and promotion of a generation of actors, and his involvement in Moldova’s national revival movement.

Art critic Larisa Turea met Emil Loteanu when the filmmaker returned to Chișinău in the 1990s. According to her, his talent, experience and ideas helped revitalise the cultural life of the capital.

“I remember that he was the first person I heard talking about Emir Kusturica’s films. Around that same time, he introduced several initiatives. He was truly an idea generator. He launched the magazine Lanterna Magică, which we hope to continue, and the Phoenix creative studio for young filmmakers. He also launched the television programme A Star Is Wanted, which gave children from Moldova’s villages the opportunity to become stars,” Larisa Turea said.

Emil Loteanu also played an important role in training new generations of actors. In Chișinău, he led an acting course for theatre and film, attended by artists who would later become widely recognised, including through their performances in his films.

“Emil Loteanu had an exceptional cinematic instinct for discovering great actors. He could take an ordinary person with no formal acting education and turn them into a star. And that is without even mentioning the young directors he inspired with his passion for cinema. He was also an excellent teacher because, beyond discovering talent, he knew how to pass on his passion for filmmaking,” said Virgiliu Mărgineanu, film producer and Director General of OWH Studio.

To mark the 90th anniversary of the filmmaker’s birth, Realitatea Media Group and its partners are organising a series of events dedicated to Emil Loteanu’s life and artistic legacy.

A director and screenwriter of more than 20 films, Emil Loteanu became one of the filmmakers from this cultural region to achieve the greatest international recognition. His works, including A Hunting Accident, The Fiddlers and The Gypsies Are Found Near Heaven, were watched by tens of millions of viewers and received numerous awards at international film festivals.
