A Day of Historic Significance: 35 Years Since the Legal Formation of Moldova’s First Parliament

April 17 marks 35 years since Moldova legally established its first Parliament.

On this occasion, Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu stated that many deputies of the first Parliament, supported by the will and determination of hundreds of thousands of citizens, paved the way for Moldova’s independence and freedom.

”They are the founding parents of our state — we owe them our freedom, sovereignty, and independence. As a historian, I can say the first Parliament represents a milestone for our nation and our ideals,” Grosu said.

He thanked the deputies who shaped history and laid the foundation for Moldova’s independence.

”European integration, first mentioned in the Declaration of Independence, is now closer than ever. Moldova is officially a candidate country for EU accession.

We are building in Moldova today a duty toward future generations who sacrificed themselves and defended their country’s future. We are now living in that future, and it must look European – prosperous, free, and democratic.” he added.

Moldova held the first session of its democratically elected Parliament on April 17, 1990. On May 23, 1991, the Supreme Soviet of the Moldavian SSR adopted a decision that transformed the Soviet Republic into the Republic of Moldova, officially establishing the country’s first Parliament.
