The Republic of Moldova is heading toward another record rapeseed season, as farmers import more than 40% more seeds compared to the previous campaign, which already delivered the highest harvest and export levels in the country’s history.
Economist Iurie Rija reports that between June 2025 and March 2026, importers brought in 369 tons of rapeseed seeds, compared to 258 tons in the previous agricultural season. Analysts consider this increase a relevant indicator, since Moldova does not produce rapeseed seeds locally and imports all seed material, BANI.MD reports.
Aerial remote sensing analysis also confirms the trend. Estimates as of June 1, 2026, show farmers have sown approximately 158,754 hectares, marking a new record for this crop. Even under a cautious scenario that allows for a margin of error of up to 10%, the cultivated area remains close to current season levels.
The cited source projects that Moldova could produce between 303,000 and 369,000 tons of rapeseed in the 2026–2027 season, depending on weather conditions. The most likely scenario forecasts about 335,000 tons, which would match the historical record set in the current season.
The data also shows that the southern part of the country dominates rapeseed cultivation. The southern region, including Gagauzia, covers more than 70,000 hectares, or 44.4% of the total sown area, while the northern region accounts for 25.5% and the central region for about 17.7%.
The economist notes that all three data sources—seed imports, drone-based area estimates, and yield projections—point to the same conclusion: Moldova is preparing for another strong rapeseed year after becoming the second-largest supplier of rapeseed seeds to the European Union in the previous season.
