Additional Funding for the Nistru River Management: Moldova to Receive Another 800,000 USD

Sweden is adding around 800,000 USD in extra funding to the UNDP project “Supporting Moldovan Authorities in the Sustainable Management of the Nistru River,” bringing the total project budget to nearly 4 million USD, according to IPN.

The project supports Moldova’s efforts to align its national legislation with EU standards on water resource management. As part of this effort, authorities will develop a detailed implementation plan for the EU Water Framework Directive.

Karin Borovic, Head of Development Cooperation at the Embassy of Sweden in Chisinau, stated that this additional funding reaffirms Sweden’s commitment to Moldova’s European path.

“We are confident that, through joint efforts for the sustainable management of the Nistru River, Moldova will achieve good water quality in line with EU requirements,” declared the Swedish Embassy’s representative.

The UNDP’s Resident Representative in Moldova, Daniela Gasparikova, emphasized that Sweden’s contribution will help strengthen the governance of the country’s most vital source of drinking water—the Nistru River.

With Sweden’s financial assistance, Moldova will acquire an acoustic current profiler for deep-water measurements exceeding five meters, along with five hydrometric current meters—tools essential for effective hydrological monitoring.

Authorities also plan to test an advanced methodology for assessing hydromorphological changes and identifying heavily modified or artificial surface water bodies. They will apply this methodology to one of the Nistru’s tributaries to help meet the EU directive’s standards.

Over the past two years, Moldovan authorities have relied on support from UNDP and Sweden to draft water policy documents, including the transposition of EU legislation into national law, development of the Nistru River Basin Management Plan – Cycle II (2024–2029), creation of new water analysis methodologies, and the launch of the Eco Media Academy to train environmental journalists.
