The People’s Assembly of Gagauzia voted unanimously on July 3 to schedule the region’s legislative elections for November 15, 2026.
The decision was adopted ahead of an expected ruling by Moldova’s Constitutional Court on a request filed by the Ministry of Justice seeking a review of the legality of several provisions governing Gagauzia, including those related to the organization of regional elections.
In June 2026, the People’s Assembly was expected to approve a draft resolution establishing the framework for the upcoming elections to the regional legislature in Comrat. The proposal was due to be voted on June 2 and was intended to apply only to the next election.
However, the vote failed after disagreements between local deputies and representatives associated with fugitive oligarch Ilan Shor in the region led to the loss of a quorum.
As a result, acting Speaker Nicolai Ormanji resigned. On July 3, deputies formally accepted his resignation and elected Valentin Gaidarji as the new speaker of the People’s Assembly.
