Moldovan MP Alexandr Stoianoglo has announced that he will run as an independent candidate for Governor of Gagauzia.

Stoianoglo said he will not resign his parliamentary mandate but will suspend it for the duration of the electoral campaign.

“First of all, I am addressing the residents of the autonomy. But I believe it is right to explain my decision to everyone who follows my work in Parliament and my relationship with the central authorities. Why did I make this decision? (…) An MP can address an issue, propose legislation and seek a solution at the national level, but the Governor has a different responsibility,” Stoianoglo explained.

The politician said he would present his electoral programme at a later stage. According to Stoianoglo, his priorities will include education, opportunities for young people, job creation and relations between Chisinau and Comrat.

The election for Governor of Gagauzia is scheduled for November 15, 2026, alongside elections for a new composition of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia.
