Designated Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu stated that he would resign if the Republic of Moldova does not join the European Union by 2030. The declaration was made during Friday’s parliamentary session, following a question from Communist deputy Adrian Domentiuc.

Domentiuc asked whether Munteanu would “resign out of honor” if the government fails to meet the 2028 EU accession target mentioned during the electoral campaign.

“Me personally? Absolutely. You’ll be very happy about that, won’t you, Mr. Voronin?” Munteanu replied. “I’m a fighter, you know. I don’t understand why you’d be glad. If we don’t join the European Union, it will be bad for everyone. I will fight until the end — believe me.”

The designated Prime Minister also suggested that members of the Communist Party would welcome a failed EU integration process, but warned that such an outcome would harm the entire country.

Moldovan authorities have set 2030 as the target year for EU accession, though other possible timelines — including 2028 — have been discussed publicly.
