In the western part of Chisinau, in the Buiucani district, the “Alunelul” Public Garden spans 11 hectares. The city founded the park in 1958 on the site of a former Jewish cemetery, replacing part of the cemetery while relocating some human remains to a new cemetery above the park.

For many years, the park posed hazards for passersby, with broken sidewalks, no urban furniture, and almost no nighttime lighting.

Chisinau City Hall began rehabilitating the park in 2020 and completed the work in two stages. Workers arranged pedestrian alleys, rebuilt the Summer Theater with a stage and seating, and installed an automated irrigation system. Landscapers enhanced green spaces, and the city upgraded nighttime and decorative lighting. The project also created multifunctional sports grounds, children’s playgrounds, chess tables, and a cycling path. To ensure visitor safety, the city installed video and audio surveillance, public restrooms, and urban furniture.

One of the park’s main attractions is its musical fountain with artistic lighting, located in the center. The fountain includes several circular water jets forming a bridge that visitors can walk under. During the summer, the jets move in sync with music, reaching heights of up to 10 meters.

Deep within the park stands the Memorial Complex honoring the victims of the 1903 Chisinau pogrom, originally installed in 1993 and recently renovated. City planners also improved the surrounding area by refurbishing the public transport stop and creating parking spaces. Chisinau City Hall carried out the works with support from the City Hall of Sector 6, Bucharest.

During the summer, the park hosts fairs for local producers, dozens of concerts, festivals, open-air film screenings, chess tournaments, and checkers competitions each year.
