As of February 2022, over 1800 Moldovans in Russia have applied to regain citizenship

As of February 24, 2022, Moldova’s embassy in the Russian Federation has received 1802 applications to regain citizenship in our country. However, their number could be higher, considering that many people have returned to their homeland to begin the formalities.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of the Republic of Moldova told Realitatea that the Russian authorities “do not provide other states with data on its citizens, so a complete and up-to-date list of Moldovans who obtain Russian citizenship is impossible.” The Chisinau diplomatic service also can not say the number of people sent or volunteered to fight in Ukraine on the side of Kremlin troops.

“It is not possible to keep a record of people of Moldovan origin who personally decide to serve in various campaigns abroad,” reads a reply sent by the MFA to Realitatea.

The authority also notes that the number of applications received by the Moldovan embassy in Russia has increased significantly since the war in Ukraine started, compared to the number of applications submitted in previous periods.
