August 27, 1991 – the day Parliament voted Independence. History-making events

The adoption, on August 27, 1991, of the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Moldova marked a new chapter in the history of the state and determined the legal and constitutional evolution of its development and of society as a whole. This historic act was to determine the quality of the development of social, economic and legal relations, IPN reports.

On August 27, 1991, tens of thousands of Moldovans gathered in the Grand National Assembly in the center of Chisinau called on the Parliament to vote Independence. The members of the first legislature adopted the Declaration by a roll-call vote of 278 deputies.

“For the first time we are being given the opportunity to formulate and express the centuries-old aspiration of the people. Today, the Moldovan Parliament has the mission and the great honor of legally enshrining the aspirations of many generations of Moldovans, the other fellow seeds in an act of unprecedented historical and civic significance”, said the then first President of the country, the late Mircea Snegur.

The signatories of the Declaration of Independence remember that on August 27, 1991, the atmosphere in the Parliament Hall, as well as in the Great National Assembly Square, was special, festive, everyone came and spoke their opinion at the microphone. At that session, the Romanian language was voted as the state language and “Deșteaptă-te, române!” was adopted as the anthem.

Just hours after the vote on the Declaration of Independence, the Romanian Government recognizes the independence of the Republic of Moldova. Romania is the first country to recognize the independence and sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova. Professor Aurelian Danila was appointed the first ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to Romania, accredited in January 1992. On 2 March 1992, the Republic of Moldova joined the United Nations.

The original declaration was burned during the 2009 protests in Chisinau, but was redrafted in 2010.

The day of the vote on the Declaration of Independence is considered Independence Day of the Republic of Moldova and is officially a day of celebration. On this occasion, festive events are organized in all villages and towns across the country on 27 August, with the largest event taking place in the Grand National Assembly Square.
