Belgium, a strong supporter of Moldova on the European road: the recommendations of Ambassador Evert Marechal

The Republic of Moldova can join the European Union shortly if its authorities maintain their current efforts, said Belgian Ambassador to Chisinau, Evert Marechal. In an exclusive interview with RLIVE TV, he discussed Belgium’s support for Moldova and offered recommendations for successful European integration.

“The best course of action is for the authorities and government to continue the positive efforts they have already started. Authorities have made significant progress toward EU membership and must uphold these commitments,” the diplomat emphasized.

Belgium, a founding member of the EU, supports Moldova through bilateral projects and via the European Union and international organizations. Marechal highlighted recent initiatives such as the Benelux business forum in Chisinau and a co-financed water purification project in rural areas.

“Moldova has strong universities and quality human resources. Compared to Belgium or other EU member states, Moldova’s costs are relatively low, making it attractive to investors. Currently, substantial funds are allocated to modernize the country and its economy. It creates opportunities for Belgian companies and firms from other EU states to contribute through partnerships with Moldovan businesses, especially in transport, mobility, and agriculture. I see many opportunities,” Marechal noted.

Regarding internal priorities, the ambassador stressed that “fundamental reforms in the rule of law, human rights, good governance, and anti-corruption are crucial to earning the trust of citizens and European partners.”

He firmly rejected myths about threats to cultural identity:

“The European Union does not threaten traditions. It focuses on economic development, transportation, mobility, environment, agriculture, trade, and digital progress. No member state has ever complained that the EU threatens its traditions or identity. On the contrary, the EU promotes the preservation and celebration of cultural heritage and diversity.”

In combating disinformation, Evert Marechal recommended investing in information monitoring systems and media literacy programs:

“Disinformation is undeniably a growing threat worldwide. It is vital to organize themselves effectively to create a strategic communication center—STRATCOM—which Moldova has recently established. Good coordination among state institutions is essential to tackle disinformation.

“It is equally important to implement a monitoring system to detect disinformation early and enable authorities to respond promptly. Another priority is to strengthen citizens’ resilience by ensuring access to reliable, independent media free from external influences or lobbying efforts,” he concluded.
