Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Vladimir Bolea announced plans to expand and modernize Chisinau International Airport, enabling it to accommodate up to 6 million passengers per year. The government will launch the reconstruction project on July 30, with construction scheduled to begin in October and finish by mid-2026.
“We’ve already exceeded 2.5 million passengers this year. If the trend continues, we’ll surpass 5 million by the end of the year,” said Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Bolea in an interview with Moldova 1. “Currently, between 20–22% of our passengers are Ukrainian citizens, which puts additional strain on the existing infrastructure.”
The modernization plan includes structural changes to the current terminal, adaptation to international aviation standards, and implementation of new technologies to double passenger capacity. Minister Vladimir Bolea announced that the airport will also receive a second floor with restaurants and expanded waiting areas. Authorities will extend the runways to improve traffic flow and safety.
