Botan Warns Moldova Against Accepting Russian Gas, Citing Risks of Energy Dependence and Geopolitical Blackmail

Moldova should not accept the offer of cheap Russian gas, as it carries significant risks of energy dependence and geopolitical manipulation, argued Igor Botan, an expert in energy security, during a public debate titled “The First Lessons of the Energy Crisis in the Eastern Region,” organized by the IPN News Agency.

Botan emphasized that the recent energy crisis should serve as a crucial lesson for Moldovan politicians, urging them to avoid misleading the public on this sensitive matter. He pointed out that citizens directly feel the effects of price hikes, and authorities must consider the financial burden on households when making decisions regarding energy sources.

“The main lesson politicians should learn from the energy crisis is not to misinform the public. Price increases impact citizens’ wallets, and politicians need to be transparent and accountable,” said Botan, the project’s permanent expert.

With 2025 being an election year in Moldova, Botan warned that political actors might exploit the energy issue for electoral gain. He cautioned against the use of energy as a tool to create fear and uncertainty among the electorate.

“This year, with the elections approaching, some will try to manipulate public opinion using the energy issue, painting a bleak future for the country,” Botan explained.

The expert also criticized the rhetoric of pro-Russian forces, who advocate for resuming gas purchases from Russia, citing lower prices as the main argument. Botan firmly rejected this position, explaining that such a move would put Moldova at significant risk.

“We often hear calls to buy Russian gas because it’s cheaper. The problem is that Russia uses energy as a weapon of geopolitical blackmail. Moldova must not fall into this trap again,” Botan warned. He emphasized that while market logic suggests buying from the cheapest source, the long-term consequences of Russian energy dependence are far too dangerous for Moldova’s sovereignty and security.
