The authorities in Chisinau plan to separate the process of reintegrating the Transnistrian region from the Republic of Moldova’s European integration path. The announcement was made by the Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration, Valeriu Chiveri, who explained that the two processes have different rhythms and dynamics and cannot be synchronized, IPN reports.
“We will do everything possible to ensure that the reintegration process of the Transnistrian region is dynamic and produces results. We understand that it requires a longer period of time than the one in which we aim to advance in the negotiations for European integration,” Valeriu Chiveri stated during an event organized by Promo-LEX Association titled “Human Rights in the Transnistrian Region: Challenges, Responses, Reintegration Perspectives and the European Path.”
The official noted that the Government will try to decouple these stages to allow for a systematic and calm approach to the Transnistrian issue. “The reintegration process will require more time than it might seem at first glance,” the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized.
During the discussions, the executive director of Promo-LEX Association, Ion Manole, stressed that Moldova has “a window of opportunity” to advance in the reintegration process and urged the authorities to develop their own plan. “There have been many plans – the Iushenco Plan, the Primakov Plan – perhaps it is time to have a new one, call it whatever you want, even the Chiveri Plan. Let’s unite the efforts of our society,” Manole said.
He also highlighted the need to involve residents from the left bank of the Nistru in developing the national vision for reintegration. “It’s not just those who represent the so-called authorities there. We have over 90% of citizens who are waiting to be involved and consulted; their opinion is valuable,” the Promo-LEX director stated.
