The Republic of Moldova could finalize its withdrawal from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) around the Easter holidays, Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu said.

The head of the legislature stated that the parliamentary Foreign Policy Committee approved the advisory opinion. The authorities will now return the document to the Government for approval and then send it back to Parliament for debate in plenary session.

“Now the opinion on withdrawing from the agreement returns to the Government. The Government takes the decision, the draft comes to Parliament, and we will settle the final stage here. I would say two weeks, as there is nothing complicated there. Let us try to celebrate two things at once. If it works out, fine; if not, then after the Blajini holiday. In any case, we are leaving,” Grosu stated.

Parliament launched the withdrawal procedure on March 5, when the Foreign Policy Committee approved the advisory opinion on denouncing the Organization’s Statute, the Agreement on Establishment and its additional protocol.

After Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova began reviewing agreements within the CIS framework and denouncing numerous documents concluded under the Community. Of the 283 documents currently in force, authorities have already denounced 71, while they are examining around 60 more, according to information presented by MP Doina Gherman.
