Cristina Gherasimov: A negative result in the referendum will be a ”missed opportunity” in the history of the Republic of Moldova

A positive result in the autumn referendum would send the strongest signal that citizens desire security and EU accession. It is how Cristina Gherasimov, the Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration, described it during an August 8 broadcast on Deschide.md. The official also noted that a negative result would represent another ”missed opportunity” in the country’s history. Nevertheless, she expressed optimism, highlighting that citizens have clearly understood the difference between East and West.

”If we receive a positive vote, it will be the strongest political signal that we, as a country, are united and desire a secure path and a safe future. I do not want to discuss a pessimistic scenario where the referendum might not succeed because I have full confidence in our citizens,” stated Cristina Gherasimov.

Although she does not believe in a pessimistic scenario, the chief negotiator acknowledges that a potential failure could provoke reactions from the European Union.

”Of course, there will be a reaction from Brussels and the EU member states. If our citizens decide they do not want to see the Republic of Moldova in the European Union, it will be another missed opportunity in the history of the Republic of Moldova.”

The national constitutional referendum for joining the European Union will be held on October 20, the same day as the presidential elections. In the autumn plebiscite, citizens will respond to the question: ”Do you support amending the Constitution to allow the Republic of Moldova to join the European Union?” The proposed constitutional amendment includes adding two new paragraphs to the Supreme Law, which reaffirms the European identity of the Republic of Moldova and the irreversibility of the European path. Additionally, EU integration will be declared a strategic objective of the country.
