President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides reaffirmed his country’s strong support for the European integration of the Republic of Moldova and announced that EU enlargement will be one of the key priorities during Cyprus’s presidency of the EU Council. He made the statements at a joint press conference with President Maia Sandu during her official visit to Nicosia, IPN reports.
The Cypriot leader assured that his country will make “every effort” to ensure that the next six months deliver visible progress in Moldova’s accession process. “Today I conveyed to the President of the Republic of Moldova — and I state publicly — Cyprus’s firm support for Moldova’s European perspective, as well as our determination to promote the enlargement agenda as an important priority during our presidency,” Nikos Christodoulides said.
He also highlighted Cyprus’s intention to strengthen bilateral relations and announced that several agreements will be signed soon. “The Cypriot presidency of the EU Council, which we will assume with honor in 19 days, will stand by Moldova not with words but with concrete actions. We remain at your disposal during the upcoming semester and beyond to help bring Moldova even closer to the EU,” the Cypriot president stated.
Maia Sandu’s visit to Nicosia takes place as European support for Moldova’s EU accession path intensifies and as Cyprus prepares to take over the EU Council presidency.
