Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popsoi Strengthens Ties with Moldovan Diaspora in Calabria and Sicily

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popsoi met with Moldovan citizens living in the Calabria and Sicily regions of Italy as part of a visit focused on deepening ties with the diaspora.

During the meetings, Popsoi reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening connections with Moldovan communities abroad. A key topic of discussion was the Social Security Agreement between Moldova and Italy, recently approved by the Italian Parliament and set for imminent implementation. The agreement will ensure the recognition of working years and provide Moldovans employed in Italy with pensions and other social benefits.

The minister also announced that a new agreement on the mutual recognition of driver’s licenses is nearing completion and will be signed soon, further easing the lives of Moldovans in Italy.

Popsoi thanked the diaspora for their active participation in the presidential elections and the 2024 referendum and encouraged continued civic engagement in the upcoming parliamentary elections on September 28, 2025, describing them as vital to Moldova’s European future.

As part of the visit, Popsoi also met with the Mayor of Reggio Calabria, Giuseppe Falcomata, and expressed gratitude for the city’s support of the Moldovan community.
