Deputy Prime Minister: Moldova–EU Summit on July 4 Will Not Mirror the June 2023 Summit

Chisinau will host a historic summit between the European Union and the Republic of Moldova on July 4—a first in Moldova’s relations with the EU and a milestone in the country’s European integration. Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov confirmed the announcement and clarified that the event differs from the summit held on June 1, 2023, in Bulboaca, IPN reports.

“No Western Balkan country has ever held such a summit individually with the European Union. Hosting this summit in Chisinau for the first time is a historic event and a recognition of the tremendous efforts our society is making in preparing for EU membership,” Gherasimov stated on the show Punctul pe Azi on TVR Moldova.

According to her, the summit, held under the auspices of President Maia Sandu, will bring together high-level leaders from EU institutions, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Antonio Costa, and High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas.

Gherasimov emphasized that the format of this summit will differ from the 2023 event in Bulboaca, hosted under the European Political Community framework: “This is not a summit like the one we hosted in Bulboaca. Heads of state or government from member countries won’t attend in this format. Only representatives of EU institutions will be present,” she clarified.

She further described the July 4 event as a defining moment for Moldova’s European trajectory: “For us, this summit signals a new phase in developing relations with the European Union, and it is the highest level of engagement any country could hope for in its dealings with the EU,” Gherasimov added.
