Victoria Belous is energetic, but there is reportedly no candidate capable of defeating Ion Ceban in an election, according to Socialist Party leader Igor Dodon. He said that candidates for the capital’s mayoral race are usually selected based on political criteria.
Asked who could represent the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM) in the elections, Dodon said the candidate should be one of the party’s leaders. However, he avoided naming anyone or clarifying whether he himself might run in the upcoming Chisinau local elections.
“I don’t think anyone can beat Mr. Ceban in these elections. I believe Mr. Ceban has every chance of winning the next election. We will try to compete with him. I hope he stays healthy. As I said, either we put forward a political figure – in which case it should be someone among the top three or four people in the party – or we go with a technocratic candidate,” Dodon said.
In this context, the Socialist leader recalled the 2011 elections, when he lost the race for Chisinau mayor. In his view, the results of that election were allegedly falsified.
