Igor Dodon stated that the Republic of Moldova should urgently begin negotiations with Russia to purchase natural gas, arguing that such a step is necessary amid the energy crisis triggered by the war in the Middle East.
According to the socialist deputy, the situation on the European energy market may worsen further. He said competition for energy resources is increasing, prices will remain unstable, and “more and more states are acting pragmatically, prioritizing their national interests.”
Dodon cited Hungary as an example, noting that the country recently held negotiations with Russia and obtained guarantees regarding energy supplies.
“The leadership of this country is acting pragmatically, placing energy security and the interests of its citizens first. These are exactly the kinds of issues the authorities in Chisinau should address: ensuring stable energy supplies and protecting the country’s economic interests,” Dodon said.
The former president also argued that the world is gradually moving toward a new reality in which states will increasingly divide into two categories: those that have access to energy resources and those that do not.
“Which of these groups the Republic of Moldova will belong to depends directly on the decisions of the current government,” he added.
Dodon also criticized political discussions about joining NATO or unification with Romania, topics he claims are actively promoted by President Maia Sandu.
“Today people do not need geopolitical slogans. People need stable tariffs, heat in their homes and confidence about tomorrow,” the former president said.
