Dorin Junghietu: Moldova is negotiating with Romania to buy gas from Neptun Deep

The Republic of Moldova has expressed strong interest in purchasing natural gas from Romania’s Neptun Deep project—the largest gas reserve ever exploited in the Romanian Black Sea. Moldovan Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu announced the April 17 edition of TVR Moldova’s program “Punctul pe Azi.”

“At the moment, I can tell you that discussions and negotiations are underway with Moldovan companies to purchase natural gas from Neptun Deep as soon as it becomes available,” Junghietu said.

He praised the strong cooperation between Moldova and Romania on energy matters, noting: “We have very, very good cooperation with our Romanian colleagues, especially with my counterpart, Mr. Sebastian Burduja. We work very well together on energy.”

Junghietu highlighted that in 2024, Moldova sourced most of its natural gas from the Romanian market.

According to the minister, gas extraction from Neptun Deep will begin in January 2027—or possibly even earlier. Romania anticipates producing around 8 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually from the offshore field for a decade. This output will boost Romania’s overall gas production by 75 to 100 percent.

Romanian Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja previously described the project as a potential “regional game changer.”

“We will export, and it’s very good that we will earn from it while helping other countries reduce their dependence on the Russian Federation,” Burduja said in February.
