Double Standards from Gagauz Authorities: In Favor of Cooperation with the EU, but Opposed to Integration

Gagauzia’s leaders delivered contradictory messages during the EU–Moldova summit in Chisinau. Deputies from the People’s Assembly in Comrat acknowledged “the need to strengthen relations with the EU across all areas,” yet reminded that residents of Gagauzia voted against European integration, reports IPN’s correspondent from the Gagauz Autonomous Territorial Unit.

On July 3, the day before the summit, the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia issued its first statement, declaring that the political event “is of major importance for the future of our country and concerns the interests of the entire population.”

The deputies recognized “the need to strengthen comprehensive relations with the European Union and the importance of its support in addressing the economic, political, and social challenges facing our country, as well as in promoting democracy.”

At the same time, they claimed that the Moldovan government is promoting EU accession “without considering the opinion of Gagauzia’s residents or involving its representatives in the consultation process.”

Victor Petrov, deputy governor of Gagauzia, complained that “no Gagauz politician participated in the summit” and that Gagauzians “were simply ignored.”

MP Vitali Gavrouc told IPN that the statements made by Gagauz authorities are “manipulative.” In his view, they exploit people’s mistrust of EU democratic institutions and the values of a free and civilized world.

Gavrouc emphasized that the local population participates through EU-supported projects implemented in the region.

He expressed hope that the region’s pro-European youth and forward-thinking citizens would grow more influential and play a key role in shaping public opinion.
