EU Accession by 2030 Is an Achievable Goal for Moldova, Says the AFET Chair Ahead of Chisinau Summit

Full EU membership for the Republic of Moldova by 2030 is an achievable goal, provided there is ‘sustained political will,’ said David McAllister, Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), on Thursday, ahead of the July 4 EU–Moldova Summit in Chisinau, according to Agerpres.ro.

McAllister stated in a press release issued by the European Parliament: “The first EU–Moldova Summit in Chisinau marks a strategic milestone in deepening the Republic of Moldova’s integration into the European Union. It reflects the growing political, economic, and security partnership between the EU and Moldova at a crucial moment in the country’s European journey.”

The German MEP recognized that Moldova has made substantial progress toward EU accession, noting that “reforms in justice, rule of law, and anti-corruption are advancing, and the launch of accession negotiations (…) is now near.” He added that the €1.9 billion Growth Plan for the Republic of Moldova supports this process by strengthening key sectors, improving infrastructure, and increasing economic resilience.

McAllister assured: “At the same time, Moldova continues to face hybrid threats, including disinformation, cyberattacks, and external interference, as part of broader efforts to undermine its democratic development. The EU remains committed to strengthening the Republic of Moldova’s sovereignty, security, and resilience in the face of such external pressure.”

The MEP also emphasized that bringing the Republic of Moldova closer to the EU means “accelerating energy integration, increasing connectivity, and building a safer and more sustainable future for Moldovan citizens.”

McAllister argued that Moldova’s ongoing alignment with EU norms and standards already delivers tangible benefits and reaffirmed: “Full EU membership by 2030 is an achievable goal, provided there is sustained political will.”

He concluded: “Moldova is a European country by geography, by values, and by aspiration. The EU must continue to firmly support the Republic of Moldova on its path toward accession—politically, financially, and strategically.”
