EU member countries reached a consensus: position on Moldova’s accession adopted. Negotiations start on Tuesday evening?

European Union member states have agreed on Moldova’s accession to the community. The EU Council adopted the general position on the subject.

Negotiations will start in Luxembourg on Tuesday. The EU will announce the decision for Ukraine at 3:30 PM. Officials will announce the decision for Moldova after 6:00 PM.

EU member states have already agreed negotiating frameworks with Moldova and Ukraine. For instance, Latvia gave the green light to the process on June 21. It decided to offer financial assistance worth 50 billion (the minutes of the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers in Riga do not indicate the currency).

Prime Minister Dorin Recean will lead Moldova’s delegation to Luxembourg. Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov, Head of Diplomacy Mihai Popsoi, Economy Minister Dumitru Alaiba, Agriculture Minister Vladimir Bolea, Education Minister Dan Perciun, Infrastructure Minister Andrei Spînu, and Secretary General of the Government Artur Mija will also represent our country.

Moldova applied for EU membership in March 2022, shortly after the outbreak of war in Ukraine. A few months later, in June 2022, we achieved candidate country status for membership, and in December 2023, the EU decided to open negotiations.

On June 21, Maia Sandu signed the decree on Moldova’s EU accession negotiations. The objective set by the authorities in Chisinau is for our country to join the European Union by 2030.
