The European Union is prepared to provide Moldova with additional support to protect its citizens and strengthen national security, including through additional EU funding, if requested by the authorities in Chisinau. The statement was made in Strasbourg by Romanian MEP Siegfried Muresan, the European Parliament’s rapporteur for the EU’s multiannual budget for 2028–2034, Ziarul de Gardă reports.
Muresan made the statement during a press conference in response to a question from a journalist and co-founder of Zona de Securitate.
The MEP said that since the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the EU has repeatedly told Moldovan authorities that it is ready to support the country in any way it considers necessary to protect its citizens.
“Whenever the Republic of Moldova has requested EU support to reduce its energy dependence, to successfully overcome periods when the Russian Federation tried to use energy as a threat against Moldova, or when Moldovan authorities requested additional European funds to strengthen the country’s security and defense, the EU has always responded positively,” Muresan said.
According to Muresan, Moldova has €1.9 billion available through the Growth Plan for the 2025–2027 period, but European support could be increased if Chisinau requests additional assistance.
“In addition to the €1.9 billion available to Moldova through the Growth Plan for these three years — 2025, 2026 and 2027 — whenever Moldova requests more support to protect its citizens, the EU will be ready to provide that support, including in the form of European funding,” Muresan said.
The MEP also noted that EU funding for Moldova has increased in recent years following annual negotiations over the bloc’s budget.
“In each annual EU budget negotiation in recent years, we have managed to increase the funds allocated to Moldova,” he said.
Muresan added that he submitted an amendment to the EU’s 2027 budget this year calling for increased funding for Moldova. He expressed confidence that the amendment would receive support in the European Parliament’s plenary and that the final negotiations with the European Commission and the Council of the EU could secure additional European funding for Moldova.
