European Commissioner Michael McGrath Visited Chisinau. What did he discuss with the officials?

Michael McGrath, European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, Rule of Law, and Consumer Protection, visited Chisinau on June 5–6.

According to the EU Delegation in Chisinau, the visit began with a tour of the Consumer Call Center, accompanied by the Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization, Doina Nistor. The center serves as a model of best practices in consumer protection, aligned with European standards.

The agenda for June 6 focused on judicial reform. Commissioner McGrath held a meetings with the Integrity Evaluation Commission, the Superior Council of Magistracy, the Superior Council of Prosecutors, and the Supreme Court of Justice

In the afternoon, he participated in high-level discussions with Prime Minister Dorin Recean and Veronica Rosca, head of the Parliament’s Legal Committee on Appointments and Immunities, to address Moldova’s progress on the European integration path.

Prime Minister Dorin Recean reaffirmed that justice reform remains Moldova’s most complex and challenging task, but emphasized that only a strong rule of law can ensure the sustainability of reforms across all sectors.

“We are not pursuing these reforms solely to join the European Union,” said Recean. “We are doing it because it is in the best interest of our citizens. We want to move fast, but with the necessary seriousness and thorough analysis to do things right.”

At a joint press conference held today with Moldova’s Minister of Justic,e Veronica Mihailov-Moraru, European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, Rule of Law, and Consumer Protection, Michael McGrath, reiterated the EU’s support for Moldova’s European path.

“The Republic of Moldova is firmly committed to joining the EU, and I am convinced its future lies within the European Union,” said the Commissioner. “The accession process is grounded in fundamental principles. Moldova must strengthen the rule of law and protect human rights to secure its path to EU integration.”
