European Parliament Calls for Increased Financial and Technical Support for Moldova

The European Parliament is calling for a faster accession process for the Republic of Moldova to the European Union, announced MEP Siegfried Muresan. According to him, the European Parliament’s Plenary adopted today, by a large majority, the annual report on relations with Moldova, IPN reports.

The European Parliament urges the European Commission to provide more robust support to the authorities in Chisinau to complete bilateral screening and to open the first negotiation chapters in the coming months.

At the same time, European lawmakers are pushing for increased EU assistance—both financial and technical—for Moldova to counter external interference and hybrid attacks, particularly from the Russian Federation.

“This support is especially vital given the upcoming parliamentary elections this fall. These elections are crucial for Moldova’s continued European path, and the risk that Russia and other foreign actors may try to influence the outcome is high,” stated Siegfried Muresan.

“We are also calling for the permanent liberalization of trade between the EU and Moldova. This measure would replace the current temporary liberalization introduced after Russia launched the war in Ukraine, which allowed Moldovan agricultural goods—cut off from eastern markets— so that farmers redirect toward the European market,” the MEP added.

According to Muresan, temporary liberalization has already led to a significant increase in Moldova’s agricultural exports to the EU. “However, permanent liberalization would offer local producers greater predictability and boost foreign investor confidence in Moldova’s economy,” he emphasized.
