The Chisinau Court of Appeal upheld the Ciocana Court’s decision to extend the house arrest of Gagauzia Governor Evghenia Gutul. The court rejected her lawyers’ appeal, IPN reported.
Lawyer Sergiu Moraru said, “The ruling is illegal. Unfortunately, this is the reality. When a criminal case targets a politically active person, the authorities ignore legal arguments. Authorities have no grounds to impose preventive measures on Evghenia Gutul.”
Gutul’s supporters gathered outside the Court of Appeal during the hearing to protest the court’s decision.

On April 9, the Ciocana Court ordered Gutul’s release from the detention center and placed her under house arrest, extending the measure.
Authorities detained Gutul on March 25 at Chisinau International Airport. She faces charges in two criminal cases. One case accuses her of mismanaging campaign funds, illegal financing, and falsifying declarations during her run for Gagauzia’s governor. In the second case, prosecutors accuse her and the secretary of the former Shor Party’s central office of helping finance the party and an electoral candidate illegally, allegedly as part of an organized criminal group.
