The Republic of Moldova could realistically join the European Union by 2028–2029, according to expert Clara Volintiru, who has worked extensively on operational programs and consultancy in Romania.
Volintiru said Moldovan authorities show strong determination to complete negotiations and internal reforms swiftly. “I find this a realistic timeline, and I say this with full responsibility as an expert in the field. The upcoming September elections also carry crucial importance,” she told Realitatea.
She stressed that success depends not only on the government’s geopolitical orientation but also on its efficiency and commitment. “Moldova must avoid a lazy approach that delays reforms under the pretext of revisions. We already see negative examples in the region, like Georgia, where tacit delays undermined European integration,” Volintiru noted.

The expert added that the war in Ukraine has accelerated Moldova’s accession process. “The war opened the eyes of the international community, proving that action must be rapid and effective. Ukraine’s resilience stabilized the western front and helped Moldova,” she explained.
According to Volintiru, both internal determination and favorable external circumstances support Moldova’s chances of becoming an EU member by the end of the decade.
