Fewer Marriages in 2024: Young People Show Less Interest in Formalized Relationships

In 2024, couples in the Republic of Moldova registered 14,800 marriages, 6% fewer than in the previous year, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics.

Couples entered into marriage for the first time in 9,700 cases, and in 86.1% of these, both spouses were between 16 and 34 years old. Most men marrying for the first time were aged 25–29 (39.3%), while most women married at ages 20–24 (45.7%). The average age at first marriage was 29.9 years for men and 26.9 years for women.

The number of young people marrying decreased significantly: by 7.8% among men and 7.4% among women compared to 2023. The sharpest decreases occurred among men aged 25–29 (down 8.4%) and women aged 16–19 (down 14.7%).

Also in 2024, authorities recorded 9,500 divorces, 40.8% involving women and 30.1% involving men aged 16–34. The number of divorces among young people fell by 3.5% compared to 2023, by 3.7% among men and 3.8% among women.
