For the first time, the Republic of Moldova becomes a member of the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for the next four years. Delegates elected Moldova to the board today at the forum held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
“This choice confirms the international recognition of the Republic of Moldova’s efforts to promote quality education, protect cultural heritage, and develop science and innovation. The mandate within the Executive Council of UNESCO offers an important opportunity to strengthen the values of an open society based on knowledge and mutual respect,” declared Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popsoi.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that through this new mandate, valid until 2029, the Republic of Moldova aims to strengthen international cooperation in UNESCO’s fields of activity and to promote intercultural dialogue.
The Executive Council, one of UNESCO’s main governing bodies, implements the decisions of the General Conference, monitors program implementation, formulates recommendations on admitting new member states, and plays a crucial role in selecting and appointing the Director-General.
